Open Gardens - The Ridge Winchelsea Beach
Location: Rye
2-5pm, half a dozen neighbours on the windswept reaches of Rye Bay – which nestles between Hastings and Rye Harbour - will open for viewing. Owners will be on hand to discuss their gardens. Strawberries and cream, home-made cakes and teas will be served in the gardens. A variety of stalls selling plants and items for house and garden, will also be sited along the beach road. The gardens are situated on the harsh coastal environment of one of the world’s unique landscapes – a shingle ridge which runs along the East Sussex/Kent coast as far as Dungeness and northern France. Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn more about the plants and wildlife, as the gardens are adjacent to Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. Visitors will also be able to view the Grade II listed Mary Stanford Lifeboat House – an iconic building which is probably the last remaining shore-launched lifeboat house in the country - and hear about plans for restoration. The Friends of the Mary Stanford Lifeboat House was launched a year ago to restore the building, and re-open it as a coastal classroom. All monies raised at the open gardens will be donated to this important restoration project. A picturesque path across the salt marsh, from the Mary Stanford on the beach, to the lifeguard cottages inland, which is normally closed, will be open for visitors for the day.
